How to Calculate Fuel Cost
Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price. Example: 500 km trip, 8 L/100km car, fuel at $1.60/L → (500 ÷ 100 × 8) × 1.60 = 40 × 1.60 = $64.
Factors That Affect Fuel Consumption
- Speed: Fuel efficiency peaks around 80–90 km/h and drops at highway speeds.
- Air conditioning: Can increase consumption by 5–25%.
- Tire pressure: Under-inflated tires raise fuel use by 3% per psi drop.
- Load: Extra weight increases consumption proportionally.
Electric Vehicle Equivalent
For EVs, replace L/100km with kWh/100km and fuel price with electricity price per kWh. Compare your EV running costs against petrol using the same formula.
