What Is a Fraction?
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom), separated by a slash. For example, 3/4 means 3 parts out of 4.
How to Add and Subtract Fractions
To add or subtract fractions, find a common denominator. For example: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. Our calculator handles this automatically, including simplification to lowest terms.
Multiplying & Dividing Fractions
Multiply numerators together and denominators together: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply: 2/3 ÷ 1/4 = 2/3 × 4/1 = 8/3.
Converting Fractions to Percentages
Divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100. Example: 3/8 = 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. Use our Percentage Calculator for quick conversions.
Mixed Numbers
A mixed number like 1½ equals 3/2 as an improper fraction. Convert mixed numbers before calculating: multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator.
